Push-pull technology improves carbon stocks in rainfed smallholder agriculture in Western Kenya

نویسندگان

چکیده

Push-pull technology improves agricultural productivity. However, its long-term effect on biomass carbon and soil organic (SOC) is not yet known. The aims of this study were: to assess the push-pull (1) (2) SOC, considering climatic conditions length time that had been practiced a farm; (3) establish relationship between SOC farms. Aboveground were measured 36 farms in western Kenya, encompassing three contrasting sites (Bondo, Siaya Vihiga) six cropping systems (push-pull five non-push-pull systems). Farms Kenya stock 3.0 ± 0.3 4.0 0.4 t C ha−1 crop 24.4 2.1 37.0 2.6 for those practicing push-pull, 1.1 0.2 19.2 31.1 1.7 without push-pull. There was no correlation SOC. Adoption offers opportunities mitigate climate change through sequestration plants soils low-, medium- high-rainfall environments both long short rain seasons.

Conservation Agriculture Improves Soil Quality, Crop Yield, and Incomes of Smallholder Farmers in North Western Ghana

Conservation agriculture (CA) practices are being widely promoted in many areas in sub-Saharan Africa to recuperate degraded soils and improve ecosystem services. This study examined the effects of three tillage practices [conventional moldboard plowing (CT), hand hoeing (MT) and no-tillage (NT)], and three cropping systems (continuous maize, soybean-maize annual rotation, and soybean/maize int...

Soil Organic Carbon Content and Stocks in Relation to Grazing Management in Semi-Arid Grasslands of Kenya

Rangelands cover approximately 85% of Kenya’s land mass and is a major resource for livestock farming with a considerable potential to mitigate climate change, yet these lands are stressed differently by various management. Our study aimed at determining the influence of grazing management systems (rotational, continuous and ungrazed) on soil organic carbon stocks in Yoani ranch located in the ...
